The Lighthouse

Description

The lighthouse at Breskens is a real landmark on the dunes of Zeeland, Netherlands and I set out to paint it on location on a sunny morning in spring. Having found a suitable spot, I set up my easel on the beach and put on suncream and skipped hat – both very important when painting on location with skin as yet unused to the strong sun! With only the beach in the foreground, the sea beyond and those typical wavebreakers on the Zeeland coast, I have kept the composition minimalistic and free of too much dune landscape, people or other distractions. The focus is on the lighthouse itself as a symbol protecting from danger and guiding to a safe haven.

“The Lighthouse” was painted on 600g rough grain, mould made Hahnemühle watercolour paper using Windsor and Newton paints. With this most maritime of subjects, it would be a good addition to an art collection in a coastal home. The painting comes in a warm white mount to fit a standard frame size of 50cm x 60cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. If you like this painting, you might want to take a look at the rest of my series of maritime paintings too – boats and beaches painted on location in the Netherlands and in Scotland.
