Painting en plein air is such an integral part of Morag Paul’s philosophy as an artist that any “About the Artist” section must begin by exploring this technique. The French Impressionists of the 19th century in particular shaped the concept of plein air painting, leaving their studios behind to draw inspiration directly from nature. The technique of painting outdoors is especially valued because it allows artists to capture spontaneous impressions and fleeting light conditions, conveying the beauty of the landscape in all its facets. Direct contact with nature enables an immediate experience of the surroundings and draws inspiration from the real world, leading to a deeper understanding of the landscape and its atmosphere. Natural light is constantly changing, and as an artist, one must capture colours and shadows in a lively, dynamic way, resulting in expressive paintings. Working outdoors encourages a spontaneous and intuitive approach to painting and offers a special way to connect with nature. It nurtures not only creativity but also an awareness of the environment and its beauty. In this way, painting en plein air is more than a technique; it is a philosophy that unites art, nature, and the creative process.

Scottish artist Morag Paul discovered watercolour painting early on, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather while simultaneously redefining the family tradition. After studying philosophy and modern languages at the University of Glasgow, she further developed her artistic training with renowned watercolour masters. Her work has been shown in international exhibitions and has received multiple awards, including a jury prize in Kobe, Japan .In 2022, the Saarländischer Rundfunk (Saarland Broadcasting) dedicated a television feature to her work (Klick here). In 2024, she demonstrated her technique at the invitation of the German Watercolour Society during their annual exhibition before a professional audience.

Morag Paul works almost exclusively en plein air. She often draws inspiration from the vastness of the Eifel-Ardennes, the wine-growing landscapes of the Moselle, and the light-filled coast of the Netherlands. Her watercolours combine precision and authenticity with spontaneity and vibrant expressiveness—a style of painting that not only depicts the landscape but also makes it vividly perceptible.
