Evening Grasses

Description

As the summer sun gets low in the sky causing the trees and grasses to become backlit, they take on hues of dark blues or greys against the yellow fields where the sun’s warm rays still shine. It was this scene that I wanted to capture near the village of Beuren in the beautiful Hunsrück region of Germany where old apple trees stand on the brow of the hill beside a field. There are just basically two main colours here – blues and yellows – mixed to create many different hues – with the additional brown head of dry grass, and this uniform tonality gives the painting a certain peacefulness while the yellow also suggests warmth. It was the long grasses waving in the breeze that really caught my attention and I paid lovingly attention to portaying them in their individuality.

“Evening Grasses” was painted en plein air in summer in Hunsrück, Germany. It is an original watercolour painted on Hahnemühle 600g mould made paper using Windsor and Newton paints. It comes with a white mount to fit a standard frame size of 40cm x 40cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
